What is Atrial Septal Defect Repair?

An atrial septal defect (ASD) is a congenital (birth) heart defect when a hole develops between the two upper chambers of the heart (the left and right atrium). A large untreated ASD leads to premature death from heart failure and closure is always necessary.

Some ASD’s can be closed through the groin (much like a catherization). ASD’s which are too large to close that way can be readily repaired with the DaVinci Robot through tiny incisions in the right chest; the same approach used for the mitral valve.

Robotic repair allows for a faster return to normal activities. (two weeks versus two months, fewer transfusion, fewer infections, less pain and an improved cosmetic result). Women can cover their incisions with their bra or swim suit.
