Dr. John Richardson, Jr. graduated from Auburn University and earned his medical degree from the University of South Alabama. He served as a resident in General Surgery at the University of South Alabama followed by a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. In 1989 Dr. Richardson and his family moved to Birmingham, Alabama, and the past 32 years he has served as a dedicated member of Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons, P.C.

His areas of specialty include Minimally Invasive Surgery, Mitral Valve, Tricuspid and Aortic Valve Surgery.

Dr. Richardson is a Fellow with The American College of Surgeons. His Board Certifications include the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is a member of the medical staff at Ascension St. Vincent’s Birmingham Hospital.

He maintains memberships with several national and local professional organizations including The Medical Association of the State of Alabama, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Jefferson County Medical Association, John W. Kirklin Society, and the American Medical Association.

In addition to serving the patients at CTS, Dr. Richardson also serves as a mentor to Auburn University football players where he has volunteered many years on the medical staff for the football program. He is very passionate about the medical needs for Military Special Forces and is involved in assisting with those needs including helping to raise funds for Suicide Prevention for Military Special Forces.

Dr. Richardson is a member of Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church. He and his wife, Sonja of 44 years have 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren that they enjoy spending time with. He also enjoys health and fitness, with weightlifting and daily high intensity workouts.
